Sunyani Diocese gives birth to a new Female Religious Congregation

Bishop and Sisters

The Catholic Diocese of Sunyani has been depicted as the Little Vatican City. The Diocese records seventeen Religious Congregations with each of them carrying out one or more of the works of the Church. In this way the Church in Sunyani is richer in good deeds and is able to carry out its mandate to evangelize. The diocese according to the words of a renowned Religious Brother is friendly to Religious Congregations.

Congregation of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word (SVI) is a newly born Diocesan Women Religious Congregation whose founder is Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, the Catholic Bishop of Sunyani. The late Bishop James Kwadwo Owusu identified a real need and expressed the desire to form a Congregation of Women Religious who would love to dedicate their lives to the service of God’s people in the rural and deprived urban areas. For a number of reasons this dream did not materialize.

The four pioneers of this historic Congregation who recently made their first Profession of vows are Sisters Emelia Fekaa Pepra, Alice Adu Amoah, Joyce Owusuaa, and Hagar Amponsaa. The formation of the sisters started on October 7, 2008. The celebration was witnessed by over seventy priests, a host of Religious Men and Women from all the seventeen Religious congregations in the Diocese and representatives from all the Societies and Parishes in the Diocese.

In his homily, Bishop Gyamfi expressed his gratitude to the many people who worked tirelessly to get this newest Congregation off the ground especially the various Religious Congregations in the Diocese, the parents of the newly professed Sisters and the Formation team. The Bishop also called for their continual support for those still in formation and those yet to come.

The Bishop told the Sisters that their Profession is the First and the only first of the many First Professions that will take place in the SVI Congregation. You hold a privilege position as the pioneers of this Congregation. That position is both an honour and a privilege. You therefore hold the responsibility to make saints of all the Sisters who will join this congregation, the Bishop stressed.

Remember my daughters, that the moral standards of the Congregation must be lofty, its discipline rigorous and its demands on its members exacting. There should be no compromises and no personal interpretation and subjective living of the Constitution, the Bishop exhorted the newly Professed Sisters.

The four Sisters have been assigned to work in the Diocesan Educational and Health Institutions in Wenchi.
